I am a clinical microbiologist, registered to practice in both the UK and the Netherlands, with a PhD on drug-resistant tuberculosis and with 19 years of clinical, laboratory and community-based infectious diseases focused research experience.
From 2015 I have been director of the Oxford University Clinical Research Unit (OUCRU) in Hanoi, Viet Nam. OUCRU Hanoi has offices at the National Hospital for Tropical Diseases and the National Institute of Hygiene and Epidemiology. OUCRU Hanoi employs around 50 people including 4 principal investogators, and has formal collaborations with ministries, universities, institutes and national, provincial and district level hospitals.
OUCRU Hanoi hosts a broad research programme on antimicrobial resistance that includes clinical, community, social sciences, and laboratory research and public and policy engagement. OUCRU Hanoi also has to capacity to conduct clinical trials in hospital and community, in- and outside of Viet Nam and currently is part of the RECOVERY trial and leads implementation of the trial within the AWaRe1 project (PI Mike Sharland, City St. Georges).
Between 2007 and 2015 I worked at OUCRU in Ho Chi Minh city, Viet Nam and led the Emerging Infectious Diseases group. Between 2007-2010 I also headed the Virology Reference Laboratory for the Southeast Asian Infectious Diseases Clinical Research Network (SEAICRN). I was the biosafety point of contact and technical lead of the design, construction and commissioning of the Category 3 / Special Animal Pathogen Order 4 laboratory for Mycobacterium tuberculosis and highly pathogenic avian influenza virus and other zoonotic viruses work at OUCRU and established and supported molecular diagnostic laboratories in 3 hospitals in Ho Chi Minh city that were part of this network. I established and led a multi-disciplinary research group for the study of Enterovirus A71 and hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD). Our group also took responsibility to rapidly develop primary and other diagnostics for emerging infections as Influenza viruses A/H1N1pdm09, A/H7N9, MERS-CoV, Zika- and Ebola virus for sharing with local and regional partners and national institutes.
I have supervised 18 PhD students to completion (Open University [UK], University of Oxford [UK], University of Montpellier [FR], University of Amsterdam [NL] and Radboud University [NL]) and authored >250 original research publications and 7 book chapters.
