Prof. Datuk Ts. Dr. Abdul Khalil Shawkataly, known as Abdul Khalil H.P.S. is a Senior Professor specializing in Biopolymers and Biocomposites such as Bioplastics, Aerogels, Nanofibres and Nano-based Composites. Having more than 30 years of experience in teaching and research, numerous review and research documents have been published in high-impact journals. In addition, the university has entrusted him with various administrative top university positions and Dean of Faculty.
Material Science and Engineering Science become his focused area to sustain material for the future to be applied in other fields such as medical, engineering, food, environment, etc. Most recently, regarding his focus on biomaterial-based aerogel, he has successfully published an article in an Elsevier journal, Progress in Materials Science Journal, a high-impact Q1 journal (IF 48.165), titled “Biopolymer-based Aerogels: A Review of Revolutionary Solutions for Smart Therapeutic Delivery”. According to the Scopus database, a total of 14,408 citations from 328 number of publications and 57 H-index have been recorded. Regarding his excellencies, he was invited and appointed as a member of the editorial board for 6 journals, including Journal Nano Structures & Nano Objects (Elsevier). He is also actively involved in writing 7 books and 50 book chapters published by Elsevier, Springer, etc.
Abdul Khalil H.P.S. is actively involved in evaluating scholarly output and grant applications. In the past 5 years, more than 50 scientific and review articles have been reviewed i.e. Carbohydrate Polymer, International Journal of Biological Macromolecules, Innovative Food Science and Emerging Technologies, etc. Acknowledging his expertise, he was appointed as the head of the evaluation panel for national research grants applications by the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI) and Ministry of Higher Education (MOHE), as well as a member of the evaluation panel for international research grants by the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC), United Kingdom, and the National Science Center, Poland.
His ground-breaking research is biopolymer-based aerogels, an advanced natural material with a high surface area per volume, a high porosity, and a very low density, that can be used in various fields, including biomedical, environmental, and also food and beverage applications. He likes to share his findings and inspire others through conferences or invited lectures. Because of this, he is working on organizing a conference on Renewable and Sustainable Biomaterials in Sustaining People's Well-being: Food and Environment in collaboration with 3 international universities: Universitas Syiah Kuala (Indonesia); Mahatma Gandhi University (India); and Federal University of Uberlandia-UFU (Brazil) that will be held in August 2023. He was also able to successfully transform his research work, Seaweed Fibrous Based-Products through industrial collaboration that can benefit society.
Prof Khalil's expertise in research has been recognized in the international and national levels. For international level, he has been awarded as a World Class Professor 5 years consecutively (2018-2022) by the International Ministry of Education and Culture of the Republic of Indonesia, and appointed as invited fellow of International Association of Advanced Materials (FIAAM), Sweden. Several national awards have been received, including Malaysia's Rising Star Award by Thompson Reuters for being in the top 1% of Highly Cited Papers, and Elsevier award, Malaysia Research Star Award (MRSA) for category High Impact Factor (2018) and International Research Collaboration (2019). In 2019, he also received the National Academic Award (AAN) for the publication category by the Ministry of Education in recognition of his outstanding publication in the Elsevier's Journal of Cleaner Production titled Microbial-induced CaCO3-filled Seaweed-based Film for Use in Green Plasticulture Application. In addition, from 2015 to the present, he has been named Top Research Scientist Malaysia (TRSM) by the Academy of Science Malaysia (ASM). Due to his passion in research, he manages to secure research funds from various competitive sources. Since 2015, as a leader, 4 international and 15 competitive national research grants totalling RM 2 million have been awarded. Moreover, he was a co-researcher in 15 competitive grants. Since 2015, 26 PhD and 32 master’s students have graduated, and 10 postdoctoral fellows have been supervised.
