I am Gerard Muyzer, a pioneer in microbial ecology and a proud representative of the Delft School of Microbiology. My scientific journey started in molecular palaeontology, where I examined macromolecular remains in fossil shells and dinosaur bones using antibody-based techniques. Inspired by the groundbreaking work of Norman Pace and David Stahl, I shifted my focus to the microbial world—a decision that has shaped my career ever since. In 1993, I introduced denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE) to microbial ecology, transforming the field with a quick, cost-effective method for analysing microbial community structure and dynamics. This innovation allowed researchers worldwide, including in developing countries, to compare different microbial communities and track their changes over time or in response to environmental stress. Using DGGE and other molecular tools, I have studied microbial communities across a broad range of natural and engineered ecosystems. These studies have continually highlighted an astonishing microbial diversity. While molecular techniques offer valuable insights, I remain convinced that cultivating microbes in pure culture is essential for truly understanding their roles and behaviours in nature. Since 2011, I have served as Full Professor of Microbial Systems Ecology at the University of Amsterdam. My research applies systems biology to investigate microbial diversity and activity, interspecies interactions, and the role of microbial diversity in ecosystem functioning. I combine experimental work with advanced omics technologies and mathematical modelling to uncover the complex dynamics of microbial communities. In 2012, I was awarded an ERC Advanced Grant for my project PARASOL (The Paradox of Sulfur Bacteria in Soda Lakes), where I explored the diversity, ecophysiology, and adaptation mechanisms of sulfur bacteria in extreme halo-alkaline environments. I also lead the University of Amsterdam's Systems Biology research priority area, which focuses on host-microbe interactions in humans, plants, and other organisms. In collaboration with colleagues, I have studied these interactions in seagrasses, sponges, and more recently, in macroalgae such as Sargassum and Caulerpa. My research interests cover algal genomics, climate change, coral ecology, evolution, holobiont and hologenome theory, marine biology, marine microbiology, mathematical and metabolic modelling, meta-omics, molecular biology, seagrasses, seaweed, soda lakes, sponges, stable isotope probing, sulfur bacteria, and systems biology. Driven by curiosity and a deep passion for science, my work continues to reveal the hidden roles of microbial communities and their intricate interactions with their environments, laying the groundwork for future discoveries in microbial ecology.
