George‐John E. Nychas

George-John Nychas is an Emeritus Professor in Food Microbiology in the Dept of Food Science & Technology of the Agricultural University of Athens and Distinguished Professor at Shandong Agricultural University, Tai’an, China. He has received several awards and honours, including the (i) IAFP International Leadership Award (2017, USA) and (ii) IAFP International Fellow Award (2022, USA) (iii) Academic title “Doctor of Science” (D.Sc.) from the University of Bath (2019, UK). The last 30 years coordinated 8 European projects and participated in more than 30 EU projects (budget >16,5 M€) in the areas of food Safety, Food Microbial Ecology, Microbial Physiology of Pathogenic and spoilage Bacteria, Natural Antimicrobial systems, biofilms, quorum sensing, bioinformatics (metabolomics), Predictive Modelling in Foods (Mathematical), and Risk Analysis. He has published 340 papers (December 2024) in Scopus (ca. 22330 citations and h=80). He is/was a member of the Editorial Board Scientific Journals (i) “Journal of Food Protection” since 2000 (ii) “Journal of Applied Microbiology” since Oct 2005; (iii) “Letter in Applied Microbiology” since Oct 2005 (iv) Food Microbiology since Jan 2010 (v) “Frontiers in Microbiology” (From January 2010) (vi) “Food BioScience” (May 2012) (vii) Int. Food Microbiology since July 2016 (viii) PLoS ONE since 2014 (xi) ex-member of Applied Environmental Microbiology” (American Society for Microbiology) (2004-2012) He was co-chair (2008-2010) in the Professional Development Group (PDG) of “Microbial Modelling and Risk Analysis" of the International Association for Food Protection while he served (5/2003–5/2006) of the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) as a member of the BIOHAZARD group. He is a member of the pool of scientific advisors on risk assessment for DG SANCO (assignment Feb 2009 till now). Recently (1/2006 - 12/2007) he provided external expertise to the European Parliament (Committee on Environment, Public Health, and Food Safety) as an expert on food safety; he participated in the Advisory Forum of EFSA (March 2010 –June 2011) as President of the National Food Authority; and he is a member of the External Review Working Group of EFSA (May 2012 -2015).(c) His international Scientific recognition includes the following: (i) Among the Researchers with the highest reach (0.1%) (Source: Clarivate Analytics 2018), (ii) From 2016 to today, he is among the 2% of the most influential researchers (iii) Faculty member with the most references at the Agricultural University of Athens (google scholar) (iv) More than eighteen (18) of his PhD students have been elected as professors and researchers in national and international universities and research institutes.
