Professor of Physics at Imperial College London, since 1998. His early research involved bubble chamber experiments, which provided some of the first measurements of charmed hadron lifetimes. The need for much larger event samples led to involvement in the first UK silicon microstrip detector at Imperial College for the CERN NA14 experiment and then to continued interest in the further development of various kinds of silicon detectors and microelectronics. He has been a member of the CMS experiment since it was proposed in 1992, working particularly on tracking detectors and readout electronics. Much of the preparation for CMS was dedicated to R&D to solve the challenge of constructing detectors which would survive the harsh radiation environment. He participated in and led R&D projects associated with radiation damage in silicon detectors and CMOS microelectronics, optical links and signal processing for LHC electronics. This work underpins the CMS silicon tracker and electromagnetic calorimeter. He shared the UK Institute of Physics 2004 Duddell medal for development of radiation hard analogue electronics for silicon detectors, and was awarded the Chadwick medal in 2020 for pioneering work in developing silicon detectors and front-end electronics for particle physics experiments, which were vital for the observation of the Higgs boson in 2012. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 2021.
