Professor Flavio Kapczinski is a leading scientist in the area of bipolar disorder. In 2013 he was appointed as a member of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences and won the Mogens Schou Award for the work developed in research and education in Psychiatry. His work has shed light in the biological underpinnings of the decline in cognition and physical health that takes place among patients with bipolar disorder. He has contributed to development and clinical use of the concept of staging in bipolar disorder. In 2016 was included in Thomson Reuters list of "most influential minds".
