F. Javier García de Abajo received his PhD from the University of the Basque Country (1993) and then visited Berkeley National Lab for three years. He was a Research Professor at the Spanish Research Council (CSIC) and in 2013 moved to ICFO-Institut de Ciencies Fotoniques in Barcelona as an ICREA Research Professor. He is the leader of the Nanophotonics Theory Group at ICFO. García de Abajo's research program on the theory of nanoscale photonics ranges from optical characterization based on free-electron microscope spectroscopies and ultrafast electron microscopy to studies of ultrasensitive single-molecule detection, quantum aspects of light-matter interaction, plasmonic metamaterials, quantum friction, radiative heat transfer, and two-dimensional materials.
