I am currently President of the Senate of the University of Medicine and Pharmacy Carol Davila, Bucharest, Romania, and head of the Department of Cardiology and Cardiovascular Surgery at the University & Emergency Hospital of Bucharest. I am a graduate of the University of Medicine and Pharmacy Carol Davila, Bucharest, Romania, since 1990. I have been member of the faculty of the university since 1992. For more than 3 years I served as a clinical and research fellow in cardiology at the University of Wales, Cardiff, United Kingdom. I was Distinguished Invited Professor at the Cardiff University and Invited Professor and Scholar Fulbright at the Duke Clinical Research Institute, Duke University, Durham, USA.
My primary research interests are in heart failure, atrial fibrillation, echocardiography, and cardiovascular risk factors, with a focus on diagnosis of subclinical heart disease and prevention of left ventricular dysfunction. I was first author or co-author of more than 1000 scientific presentations and more than 300 original full-papers, including papers published in New Engl J Med, Nature Medicine, The Lancet, Circulation, Eur Heart J, etc. I have been an invited speaker for multiple international courses and meetings. I also have contributed chapters to more than 61 medical books, from which 11 were published abroad. I have run or participated in more than 100 clinical trials. I have been national coordinator and member of the Steering Committee for more than 40 clinical trials, and I coordinate multiple national and international registries. I am also on the editorial board of 6 medical journals.
I am member of the Romanian Academy of Medical Sciences and the secretary of the Bucharest Section of the Academy, and Corresponding Member of the Romanian Academy.
I was the chairman of the Working Group of Atherosclerosis and Atherothrombosis of the Romanian Society of Cardiology (2005-2008), Treasurer of the society (2008-2011), Vice-president of the society (2011-2014), President of the society (2017-2020), and he is currently the President of the Romanian Heart Foundation. I am also Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians, Edinburgh, United Kingdom, and member of the CLCD Membership Committee of the American Heart Association.
I have received important national awards, such as Health Merit Order of the Romanian Presidency, “George Palade” Award of the Romanian College of Physicians, Medical Award of the Romanian Foundation for Art and Sciences of the Romanian Academy, National Award for Excellence in Cardiology of the Medic.ro Publishing House, Ministry of Health and the Romanian College of Physicians, and Special Award “Iuliu Hatieganu” for research of the Romanian Academy.
I have a Hirsch’s index of 71 (Google Scholar) and 57 (WOS), with more than 29,500 citations.
