David J Brooks MD DSc FRCP(UK) FMedSci (UK) FEAN is Professor of Neurology at Aarhus University, Denmark; Professor of PET Clinical Science at Newcastle University, UK; and Hartnett Professor of Neurology in the Department of Medicine, Imperial College, London UK. He is a member of the Biosciences Advisory Panel of the Alzheimer Society UK, and has been a member of the Research Advisory Panels of the UK Medical Research Council Neuroscience and Mental Health Board, Wellcome Trust Neuroscience Grants Panel,, UK Parkinson’s Disease Society, the German Dementia and Parkinson Kompetenz Networks, German Helmholtz AB, the Austrian Science Foundation (KLIF) and the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Disease Research. He was Chairman of the Scientific Issues Committee of the Movement Disorder Society (1998-2002) and a Director of the International Society of Cerebral Blood Flow and Metabolism (1993-1997). He was Chairman of the Council of Management of the UK Parkinson’s Disease Society 1997-1998.
He is an Associate Editor of Brain and Molecular and Molecular Imaging and Biology, and is on the Editorial Boards of the Journal of Parkinson’s Disease, Synapse, Parkinsonism and Related Disorders and was on the Editorial Boards of Journal of Neurotherapeutics, Clinical Neurology and Neurosurgery, Current Neurology and Neuroscience Reports, Current Trends in Neurology. Journal of Neurology, Neurosurgery, and Psychiatry, Journal of Neural Transmission, and Movement Disorders.
In 2001 he was elected a Fellow of the Academy of Medical Science, UK and in 2018 a Fellow of the European Academy of Neurology. In 2002 he was invited to give the Stan Fahn Lecture at the International Congress of Movement Disorders, Miami, in 2003 the George Cotzias Lecture at the Spanish Neurology Society, Madrid, in 2004 the Charles E Wilson Lecture, at the Psychobiology Institute, Jerusalem March 2004, in 2005 the Kuhl-Lassen lecture at the Society of Nuclear Medicine, Toronto, and in 2006 the Sprague lecture at UC Irvine, in 2011 a Presidental Lecture at the World Congress of Parkinson’s Disease, Shanghai, and in 2017 the Ramon Y Cajal lecture. His research involves the use of positron emission tomography and magnetic resonance imaging to aid the diagnosis and study the progression of Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease and to validate their use as biomarkers in therapeutic trials. To date, he has published over 400 reports in peer reviewed journals, including Nature and has an h index of 117. His research is supported by grants from the UK Medical Research Council, Alzheimer’s Research Trust, Parkinson’s UK, the Michael J Fox Foundation, Danish Council for Independent Research, Lundbeck Foundation, and industry.
