简介

Professor Colin O’Dowd, MAE, MRIA, DSc, FInsP, FRMetS, PhD, BSc. Colin O’Dowd was born in Galway and conducted a B.Sc. in Experimental Physics at NUI Galway and his PhD in Atmospheric Physics at the University of Manchester Institute of Science & Technology. He was appointed Professor of Physics at the University of Helsinki in 2000 and Adjunct Professor in NUI Galway in 2001, and later (2007) appointed Personal Professor at the School of Physics, NUI Galway, and in 2018, Established Chair of Atmospheric Physics. He has been Director of the Ryan Institute’s Centre for Climate & Air Pollution Studies since 2005. His research focuses on formation and transformation of atmospheric aerosol, aerosol-cloud-climate interactions and air pollution – climate coupling. He is Chair of the Mace Head (Climate and Air Pollution) research station committee located on the Atlantic-Irish coastline. His research into air pollution-climate interactions has led to ~360 international journal publications, h-index of 94 and ~30,000 citations. He is ranked in the Thomas-Rueters ISI top 1% scientists in the world, highly cited researcher for many years, and No. 1 cited Enviroinmental scientist nationally. He was contributing author to the IPCC AR5 and author of many white paper and policy-driven reports. He participates in/coordinates many international high-profile research projects. He has been elected FRMetS, FInsP, 2004, 2010 Member of the Royal Irish Academy, Member of Academia European (2018) and is award winner for the International Smoluchowski Award, 2007 recipient of Doctor of Science by the University of Manchester, , the 2012 Appleton Award & Medal from the Institute of Physics, the Royal Irish Academy Gold Medal in Geosciences, 2013, the Mason Gold Medal Royal Meteorological Society 2015; and the Presidents Awards for Research Excellence, NUI Galway (2018). He was the 1st non-US-based Joint Editor-in-Chief of the leading Journal of Geophysical Research [Atmospheres], appointed in 2000. He currently is an Associate Editor with Nature's Scientific Reports and Nature's Atmospheric Science & Climate Change. In addition, prior to his election as honorary member, he has been 3 times Co-Chair of the International Committee on Nucleation & Atmospheric Aerosols, Member of the Executive Committee of the International Association of Meteorology and Atmospheric Sciences, ex-officio Member of the International Commission on Clouds and Precipitation, and Member of the RIA’s Climate Change Science Committee.
