Professor Christoph J. Binder (born 1973) received his MD degree at the University of Vienna, Austria, in 1997 and his PhD degree at the University of California San Diego, USA, in 2002. Following an additional period of postdoctoral work with Joseph L. Witztum in San Diego, he returned to Vienna in 2005 to establish his own research group. In addition, Christoph Binder is specialized in Clinical Chemistry and Laboratory Medicine. Currently he is Professor of Atherosclerosis Research at the Medical University of Vienna and Principal Investigator at the Center for Molecular Medicine of the Austrian Academy of Sciences. His research interests are immune mechanisms of atherosclerosis with a special focus on the role of innate immunity and natural IgM antibodies targeting oxidized lipids. He has won numerous prestigious fellowships and awards and has authored over 140 original and review papers in important international journals, including Nature and Nature Medicine. He is co-editors of the journal Atherosclerosis and section editor of Thrombosis & Haemostasis. He serves as editorial board member of ATVB and served as Guest Editor for a Special Review Series on “Immunology of Atherosclerosis” for the Journal Thrombosis and Haemostasis. In 2014 he was appointed as referee and board member of the Austrian Science Fund (FWF).
