Charlene Sunkel is the Founder and Chief Executive Officer of the Global Mental Health Peer Network and a leading global advocate for the rights of individuals with mental health conditions, drawing from her own lived experience. She has made significant contributions to international mental health literature, authoring and co-authoring numerous papers from a lived experience perspective. Ms. Sunkel has served as a Commissioner on the Lancet Commission on Global Mental Health and Sustainable Development, and on the Lancet Commission on the Future of Psychiatry. Additionally, she Co-Chaired the Lancet Commission on Ending Stigma and Discrimination in Mental Health. As Editor-in-Chief of PLOS Mental Health, an open access publication, she continues to influence the field. Ms. Sunkel also shares her expertise on various international boards and committees. Previously, she was a member of the South African Presidential Working Group on Disability and the Ministerial Advisory Committee on Mental Health and served as the Principal Coordinator for the Movement for Global Mental Health. Her work has been recognized with numerous national and international awards, including the Swiss Foundation/WHO Outstanding Achievement in the Field of Mental Health, the Pardes Humanitarian Prize in Mental Health, and a WPA Presidential Commendation. RESEARCH INTERESTS Ms Sunkel’s research interests revolves around lived experience integration in mental health service development and delivery, co-creation interventions, leading/ co-leading anti-stigma and non-discrimination initiatives, empowerment and leadership development of people with lived experience, lived experience involvement in policies and legislation, human rights and relevant topics that directly impacts on the mental health and wellbeing of people with lived experience, and their quality of life.
