Carlos J Pirola received his Ph.D. in Biochemistry degree in 1984 (Buenos Aires University, UBA) and has belonged to the research carrier of the National Scientific and Technical Research Council (CONICET) since then. He received training in Molecular Biology at the Cedars Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, CA, USA. He is currently a Superior Investigator of the CONICET serving as the head of the Department of Molecular Genetics and Biology of Complex Diseases and the Director of the Medical Research Institute (UBA-CONICET) (2008-2021). Since 2022, he has been the Director of the Center for Advanced Studies on Social and Health Sciences, InterAmerican Open University, and, since 2023, the Center for Translational Research in Health, Maimonides University, both in Buenos Aires, Argentina. He is a member of ASHG, IASH, and an International Fellow of the American Heart Association and the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases. His primary interest is Systems Biology of the Metabolic Syndrome components, such as hypertension, obesity, Type 2 diabetes, and fatty liver, with several national and international awards and more than 200 publications in PubMed about Genetics, Epigenetics, Metabolomics, and Pathophysiology of these cardiometabolic diseases including MAFLD. He was responsible for creating the first Center of Excellence in Translational Medicine in Argentina and serves as a Reviewer and Editor of many International Journals.
