Prof. Armando Santoro is the Director of the Medical Oncology and Hematology Unit, Cancer Center, Humanitas Clinical and Research Center IRCCS.
He has published more than 400 scientific papers in international peer-reviewed journals, several books chapters, edited/reviewed for many academic journals. He is member of the Editorial Board of several Scientific Journals (Annals of Oncology, Cancer, Digestive and Liver Disease, The Open Lung Cancer Journal, Journal of Hepato-gastroenterology, Journal of Thoracic Disease, Chinese Journal of Clinicians, Journal of Tumor), affiliated to major Scientific Societies (ASCO, AIOM, ESMO, AACR, SIE, ISG) and associated editor-in chief of World Journal of Gastroenterology. He is member of National Italian Committee on the Research Network in Oncology, Ministry of Work and of Health and Social Politics.
His huge fund of experience in Hematology and Oncology, as a physician, scientist and research manager has been placed in the service of ensuring that the Humanitas Cancer Center becomes an institution of national significance.
His idea is for the multidisciplinary combination of research and patient care to help achieve a more efficient and a faster transfer of innovative approaches from basic research to clinic. The aim of this kind of cooperation is to provide patients with full-scale treatment in line with the latest international standards.
Prof. Santoro is well known for the development of ABVD, a chemotherapy regimen for the treatment of Hodgkin lymphoma. The ABVD regimen, that in now considered the 'gold standard' for the treatment of virtually all stages of Hodgkins Lymphoma, is characterized by reduced toxicity and preservation of fertility that an important issue in this neoplasia, mainly diagnosed in young adult.
His scientific achievements include a number of clinical trials for development of targeted therapy in hepatocellular carcinoma.
Finally Prof. Santoro has managed clinical programs and trials on neoplastic diseases with a low incidence such as soft tissue sarcomas, mesothelioma, thymoma, medullary thyroid carcinomas.
Prof. Santoro has a specific interest in survivorship research area. The subgroup of long survivor patients, has dramatically grown in the past few decades and he has developed a multidisciplinary team of physicians dedicated and directly involved in its management and research. He has also dedicated a specific outpatient clinic for breast/ovarian cancer high risk patients, proposing the genetic screening and counseling to better define the lifetime risk of developing a new cancer. Dr. Santoro is promoting initiatives aimed at increasing the knowledge and awareness in this topic.
