Dr. Antoni Dávalos trained in neurology at the Vall d'Hebron University Hospital in Barcelone and qualified as a neurologist in 1984, obtaining his PhD degree in 1985. From 1986 to 2004 he developed his professional activity as Head of the Department of Neurology and Scientific Director at the Hospital Doctor Josep Trueta of Girona, Spain. From October 2004, he is the Director of the Department of Neurosciences at the Hospital Universitari Germans Trias i Pujol in Barcelona, Spain, and Professor of Medicine (Neurology) at the Autonomous University of Barcelona. Dr. Davalos has served as Secretary of the Spanish Neurological Society. In the year 2003 he was elected member of the American Neurological Association for his work on the study of cerebrovascular diseases, in 2005 he received the excellence award in research from the Catalonian College of Physicians and in 2014 the Award to the Best Research Career from the Institut Català de la Salut. His clinical research has focused on the acute phase of stroke, particularly on the molecular and genetic mechanisms associated with ischemic tolerance, neurological deterioration, hemorrhagic transformation and brain edema. He has published more than 250 original papers on cerebrovascular diseases in international journals. Dr. Davalos has been section co-editor of Stroke, is member of the editorial board of Stroke, Cerebrovascular Diseases, Journal of Neurology and International Journal of Stroke, and has been principal investigator or on the steering committee/advisor in a number of drug trials on acute stroke such as the SITS-MOST, DIAS & DIAS-2, DIAS-3, ECASS II and ECASS III on thrombolytic therapy, STAR and REVASCAT on mechanical thrombectomy, and SAINT I & II and ICTUS on neuroprotection.
