Dr. Misra is the Chairman of the Fortis-CDOC Center of Excellence for Diabetes, Metabolic Diseases, and Endocrinology, New Delhi, and the Director of the National Diabetes, Obesity, and Cholesterol Foundation, as well as the Diabetes Foundation (India). After completing his undergraduate and postgraduate studies at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi, he worked at the Royal Free Hospital in London, UK, and the Department of Medicine and Endocrinology at the Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas, Texas, USA, as a WHO Fellow and later as a faculty member. In India, Dr. Misra has participated in top advisory committees relating to diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, fatty liver, and nutrition. He has been an advisor to the Ministry of Health, the Indian Council of Medical Research, and the Department of Biotechnology on several issues related to diabetes and other non-communicable diseases.
Prof. Misra has more than 40 years of experience in teaching, service, research, and community health intervention programs. He has published more 400 scientific papers/chapters in national and international journals (citations as of Dec 2025: 58,081; h-index: 120; i10-index: 575) and books. In 2023-24, according to an analysis by Stanford University, he ranked among the top 2% of scientists globally in diabetes research from India and held the #1 ranking among researchers for diabetes and endocrinology in India.
He is the Editor-in-Chief of Diabetes and Metabolic Syndrome: Clinical Research and Reviews (a high-impact journal from Elsevier) and the past Associate Editor of the Journal of Diabetes (USA). He serves on the Editorial Advisory Board of the British Medical Journal, is a member of BMJ's Regional Advisory Board for South Asia, a member of the BMJ Academic Commission, and a member of the Lancet Obesity Commission (2023-25). He is invited member of prestigious Research Honor Society, Sigma XI (USA), 2024.
Dr. Misra has received numerous awards and delivered 40 named orations. He has been awarded India's highest honor in medicine, the Dr. B.C. Roy Award (2006), and the prestigious national honor, the Padma Shri (2007). He received the "Outstanding Investigator Award" from the World India Diabetes Foundation in 2013. His current research interests include nutrition, metabolism, and diabetes, with a focus on liver fat, pancreatic fat, lean skeletal muscle mass, and the effects of vitamin D on metabolism.
He has launched an innovative project, "Diabetes Care at Doorsteps," which has provided care to approximately 200,000 underprivileged people in Delhi. He firmly believes that everyone with diabetes should have access to quality care and that obesity should be treated as a chronic disease. He is committed to discovering new ways to prevent and treat these conditions and improving the lives of people affected by them.
He is the author of the bestselling books Diabetes with Delight and Diabetes ke Saath Khushaal Jeevan (Bloomsbury).
