I am Professor of Medicine and Dr. Gerald J. and Dorothy R. Friedman Professor Emeritus at Tufts University School of Medicine and Chief Emeritus of the William B. Schwartz Division of Nephrology at Tufts Medical Center.
During more than 40 years on the faculty at Tufts University School of Medicine and Tufts Medical Center, I have lectured and led small group discussions with thousands of medical students and rounded with hundreds of medical residents on the wards and consult services. Most rewarding has been the in-depth training of more than 100 clinical and research fellows in nephrology.
My research interests include measurement and estimation of kidney function, epidemiology and clinical trials in chronic kidney disease (CKD). For more than 20 years, I have been at the forefront of the development of equations to estimate glomerular filtration rate (GFR) from serum creatinine, cystatin C and novel filtration markers using large databases, including the widely-used Modification of Diet in Renal Disease (MDRD) Study and Chronic Kidney Disease Epidemiology Collaboration (CKD-EPI) equations. I am the founding director of CKD-EPI and founding member of the Chronic Kidney Disease Prognosis Consortium (CKD-PC) and a permanent member of the steering committee of both research groups. The use of GFR estimating equations to estimate kidney function, inform prognosis, and assess efficacy in clinical trials has transformed research, clinical practice, and public health in CKD.
I have a strong interest in research training, focused primarily at the level of post-graduate fellowship training and mentoring junior faculty. I directed the large research fellowship-training program of the Division and was Principal Investigator of the Division’s 20-year NIDDK grant (T32) “Epidemiology, Clinical Trials and Outcomes Research.” The research program was also funded, in part, by grants and contracts from foundations and industry.
I am a widely recognized authority on clinical practice guidelines in CKD and have contributed to guideline development, implementation, quality improvement and public policy in this area. I led the National Kidney Foundation (NKF) Task Force on Cardiovascular Disease in 1998 and was the Chair for two NKF Kidney Disease Outcome Quality Initiative (KDOQI) Work Groups: "Chronic Kidney Disease: Evaluation, Classification and Stratification of Risk” (published in 2002) and “Hypertension and Antihypertensive Agents in Chronic Kidney Disease” (published in 2004). I led four Kidney Disease Improving Global Outcomes (KDIGO) conferences addressing the definition and classification of CKD (2004), public health approaches and initiatives for CKD (2006), prognosis of CKD (2009), and nomenclature for kidney function and disease (2019). I participated on the KDIGO Work Groups for three KDIGO clinical practice guidelines, “Acute Kidney Injury” in 2011, “Evaluation and Management of Chronic Kidney Disease” in 2013, and "Evaluation and Care of Living Kidney Donors" in 2017. I served as co-chair of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention 2007 technical expert panel to develop strategies for preventing development and progression of kidney disease, and I served as chair of the planning committees for three Workshops co-sponsored by the Food and Drug Administration and National Kidney Foundation addressing proteinuria (2008), GFR decline (2012), early change in albuminuria and GFR (2018) as surrogate endpoints for clinical trials in CKD.
I was Editor-in-Chief of the American Journal of Kidney Diseases from 2007-2016.
I have been fortunate to receive awards from many institutions. In 2025, Tufts University School of Medicine established the Andrew S. Levey Professorship, a faculty development/junior professorship to be awarded to an early career physician scientist in nephrology at Tufts University School of Medicine. Fundraising was conducted by a committee of my former mentees and Division leaders.
