Born July 10, 1959 in Salt Lake City, USA, he received his Bachelor's Degree from the University of Utah (1981) and his PhD from the University of California Berkeley, USA (1986). Research stays included the Max Planck Institute (MPI) for Fluid Dynamics Göttingen, the University of Kaiserslautern, the Radboud Catholic University of Nijmegen, the Netherlands, as Professor at the University of California, Santa Barbara (1988-2010) also as full Professor (since 1996), Director and Scientific Member at the MPI for Biophysical Chemistry and Professor for Physical Chemistry, University of Göttingen (since 2010). He received numerous prizes and awards, among them the Presidential Young Investigator Award of the National Science Foundation, the Humboldt Research Award (1998) and an Alexander von Humboldt Professorship (2010).
